Here's What's Been Going On
In Beacons' World!
Reading: The Beacons are hard at work reading, writing chapter summaries and answering critical thinking questions about their respective reading group books of Charlotte's Web and Mr. Popper's Penguins. Your hard working Beacon would love to share with you the reading group's book. Please feel free to ask and you'll really enjoy hearing what your Beacon has to say!
Writing: Beacons have either published their first story or are in the process of publishing it. Many have started other stories while others are adding additional chapters to their second story! We also have started our rough drafts of a newspaper article about discovering a new species of animal! We have been working very hard on what exactly comprises a sentence and how to make it a strong, interesting sentence.
Spelling:Last week's words were the days of the week and the months of the year. The students all did an excellent job! Everyone's spelling test papers were loaded with stickers depicting their effort for a job well done. This week's words are the continents and the oceans. Next week we will begin our spelling groups which will focus on "word families".
Science: Last week the Beacons selected a vertebrae animal of their choice. This week they have begun their researching and are hard at work learning about the habitat and nuances of their animal! Very exciting time in the classroom with everyone comparing how cool their animal is with, "I never knew that" and "WOW listen to this!" comments exploding in delight!

Social Studies: Beacons did a wonderful job of mapping their cantaloupe which were their edible globes! There's nothing quite like holding the whole world in one's hand! They will be bringing them home on Thursday. Now that we are secure in knowing where the continents and oceans are, we're ready to learn about the currents and set sail on the Voyage of Discovery learning about the early explorers! Please enjoy cutting into your cantaloupe-world and slicing off a piece of the continents, such as the continent of Africa.
