Here's What's Going On In
Beacons' World
Language Arts: Beacons are completing chapter 10 in Charlotte's Web and chapter 13 in Mr. Poppers' Penguins. They have all completed their respective chapter summaries and vocabulary words. Way to go, Beacons!
Last week we instituted a sentence homework sheet that incorporates our "Vocabulary Word of the Day" with sentence writing. Please feel free to review your Beacon's homework vocabulary sentences. Both the daily word of the day and its definition are on this homework sheet. These sheets are to be turned in each Friday, as they were last Friday. After going over them with each student, they were put in their respective Friday Folders. Also, please feel free to ask your Beacon to try and use that word at least once a day. It should be a fun way to help build and improve all the Beacons' vocabulary and writing skills.
Writers' Workshop:Wow!We are well on our way to completing our New Animal Discovery newspaper articles. Last week I was in a teacher/student editing session and the student had written about a new animal discovery: a blue tarantula. Believe it or not, in the Nation/World section, on page A6 of Tuesday's (Oct. 26th) Tacoma News Tribune, scientists searching the Amazon have discovered a new species of a blue-fanged tarantula! That's right,  you  heard it here first in the Beacons' classroom Writers' Workshop! Very exciting indeed.
Math:Both the Math Magicals and the Magicians have been working hard in math.  Magicals are working on multiplication and Magicians are estimating and adding. They are working diligently in their math folders and in our small group lessons. We are very proud of their progress!
Science:Last Friday we had an "Enviro-challenger" educator come into our class and share with us how we can help our planet. Then on Tuesdsay, we had the Point Defiance Zoo come into our classroom and share with us exiting information and hands on activities with invertebrates. We have included a few photos for you at the end of this blog entry. We know you'll enjoy them!
Beacons also are working hard on their Science research report of the animal of their choice to get ready for their power point presentations.
Social Studies:Students are enjoying learning about Marco Polo this past week. They were amazed that he actually had a passport made out of medal that Kublai Khan had made for him. They were really excited to see a power point presentation about his travels and an interactive computer activity which incorporated social studies vocabulary and Marco Polo's travels. There is an excellent  National Geographic website which you might be interested in viewing. I pulled a few items from it to share with the class. One quick vignette. When I asked the class what they knew about Marco Polo, they shared that he was the one who invented the Marco Polo game for the swimming pool.

It's Halloween! It's Halloween! /The moon is full and bright/ And we shall see what can't be seen/ On any other night/ Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,/ Grinning goblins fighting duels,/ Werewolves rising from their tombs,/ Witches on their magic brooms./ In masks and gown we haunt the street /And knock on doors for trick or treat./ Tonight we are the king and queen,/
For oh tonight it's Halloween!
